Summit Overview


The 2009 Tribal Juvenile Justice Summit will be held on November 5-6, 2009 at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center in Albuquerque, NM.

Sponsored by the NM Children, Youth and Families Department (CYFD) and the NM Juvenile Justice Advisory Committee and presented by the American Indian Development Associates (AIDA) this one and half day event will provide participants with informative panel presentations, a keynote luncheon, and exhibitors regarding the latest tribal/state juvenile justice issues within the State.

The Summit purpose is to bring together the NM Tribes and Pueblos with state and local agencies to specifically discuss tribal juvenile justice concerns and needs in order enable the use of state services for delinquent youth through intergovernmental agreements allowable under the NM Children’s Code (NMCC).

Background

The findings and results of a statewide assessment of tribal juvenile justice systems funded by CYFD will be presented. The assessment purpose was to identify the types of juvenile justice systems operating among the NM Tribes and Pueblos and to document the improvement needs, training and technical assistance needs, resource development and other capacity and capability development needs of tribal juvenile justice practitioners.

The Summit will also feature:

• Successful tribal IGA development and implementation,

• Training on the Indian-specific provisions of the NMCC,

• Cultural training for Tribal and State juvenile justice practitioners,

• CYFD Youth Cultural Program for Incarcerated Youth, and

• Tribal-State collaboration for court-involved youth in the State system.
