Student Information

The TVSI internship is a paid internship program. Students in the TVSI program will have the opportunity to observe and assist tribal victim specialist or advocates provide services to victims of crime and learn how tribal victim service programs operate.

Internship details:

  • Placement at a tribal victim services program located in Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah or Texas.
  • 8-10 weeks (up to 20 hrs per week)
  • Orientation and training provided prior to placement.
  • Students will receive a $2500 stipend.


  • Students must be currently enrolled.
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5 to be eligible.
  • Must be over the age of 18.
  • Must complete an application and interview.
  • Pass a background check.
  • Must have reliable transportation to travel to the tribal internship site during the entire internship period.
  • Preference will be given to students that live or attend school in Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah or Texas. Students that attend schools in other states, but are from one of the five states are eligible to apply.

* Preference will be given to American Indian and Alaskan Native Students.

Student Responsibilities

Students interns will need to meet certain requirements and will be expected to comply with the following:

1) Complete a 12 hour orientation and training.

2) Interns must report to the internship on time and be ready to work and learn.

3) Interns must complete a minimum of 128 on-site hours (no more than 150 hours) within in and 8 to 10 week period.

4) Interns must adhere to internship site policies and procedures as well as the policies and procedures of the TVSI program and the your college or university.

5) Interns must summit regular time-logs to AIDA to receive their stipends.

6) Interns must complete weekly progress reports.

7) Interns must participate in the TVSI evaluation.

8) Interns must prepare and submit a brief report to AIDA reflecting on their internship experience at the end of their internship period.

Student Interns will not:

Students participating in the TVSI are not considered employees of the hosting TVSI program. Students are there to learn and gain experience and will not:

  • Be expected to be first responders.
  • Be expected to be on call.
  • Be expected to meet with the victims without supervisor or advocate (mentor) presence or oversight.
  • Be expected to manage cases.
  • Provide legal advice.
  • Be paid leave (i.e. sick, vacation, personal leave) by the TVSI program.
  • Be entitled to benefits (i.e. health, dental, retirement).
  • Work from home or remotely.
  • Be limited to providing only clerical activities.
